Parent + Me Classes

IMG_8165_edited.jpg

Here at Ascension Lutheran Early Childhood Center, our Parent + Me and Baby + Me classes are designed to nurture both children and their caregivers through connection, community, and meaningful learning experiences.

Our Parent + Me Class creates a supportive community for toddlers and their parents through hands-on learning, confidence-building activities, and thoughtful group discussions on parenting topics. Our Baby + Me Class offers a calm, observational environment where parents can connect with their infants and each other while exploring responsive parenting practices and child development.

We design these classes to be immersive and hands-on for both the littles AND the parents. We ask that all participants, adults included, come prepared to get messy and on the floor for activities - so please dress accordingly.

Parents, we also want you to take as much as possible away from the class that can be applied in your day-to-day lives. Because of that, we ask that you are not on your phones or devices during class sessions.

PARENT + ME CLASS

The foundation for this class is to help grow kind and capable little humans while also giving parents a space to share the highs and lows of toddlerhood with other parents experiencing the same chapter of life. I believe that as parents, it is our role to nurture the human we hope our child will become. By providing rich confidence building experiences in the classroom for the children as well as intimate small group discussions with parents, I hope to create a community for you and your child to experience toddlerhood together.

The Parent Talk Time is an integral part of the Parent and Me experience. It allows for deeper and more intimate group discussion. For every class, I will send you a copy of our curriculum along with a topic and article to discuss that week. My hope is that you will also share or suggest topics that are close to your heart. This allows me to create a curriculum that truly meets your needs. We will plan to sit with each topic for two weeks because half of the parents will sit with me for our discussion, while the other half of our parents will help the children explore the classroom activities. We will switch groups the following week.

I will provide a rich learning environment for your children as well. I believe that children do their best learning by having strong models to follow and through rich experiences. There will be six distinct Centers in the classroom with activities that correlate with the children’s weekly curriculum. We will have two short sit down Circle times, where we will sing songs, read books, and build confidence through music making. There will also be an opportunity to practice handwashing in the classroom as well as to sit down and have a snack together. The children will have time to explore our outdoor space which has a large sandbox, a climbing structure, tire swings, tricycles, and everyone’s favorite, a mud kitchen!

MEET

BABY + ME CLASS

In this class, parents will be encouraged to find a space in the classroom they can lay their infant down and be face to face. The class will start with a 30-minute, quiet, observation period. We start by observing our infants because observation gives us a window into what our infants are learning.  It allows us to assess what they are interested in and how to further support their development. After our observation time, the instructor will bring up a subject open for discussion. Parents are welcome to share, ask questions and/or simply listen. This time is also to support you and your infant, you are welcome to nurse/feed, change, hold or walk around with your infant as needed. The goal is foster community while learning about this philosophy, having an opportunity to practice and witness it’s practices.

Classes are held on Mondays at 11:00 am

11:00 - 11:30: Observation period

11:30 - 12:15 Practices and Principles - Infants continue to explore environment and have peer interactions

Learn about RIE: Resources for Infant Educarers

RIE founded by Magda Gerber focuses on building a respectful relationship between infants and caregivers. A primary focus of RIE is to see the infant as a whole and complete individual from birth. This philosophy promotes being baby-led, trusting infants to lead their development, responding to them while fostering their sense of self and nurturing a respectful connection.
